Q: Is it actually closed or is the "temporarily closed" incorrect? Every since I've checked, its always said temporarily closed here on Google.

A: The site is temporarily closed due to seasonal fire restrictions. Once fire restrictions are lifted, the site will reopen. Keep an eye on fire restrictions on the BLM Arizona website. https://www.blm.gov/programs/public-safety-and-fire/fire/regional-info/arizona/fire-restrictions

Q: So this "range" took the only place locally to shot away to make a range and now its ALWAYS closed. Called BLM today and was told is was supposed to be opened by end of year 2022. When will this open? With no RO there is no reason its not open now.

A: We had some damage at the site due to recent rains. We're working on finalizing construction and site repair work. The site remains closed until this construction work is complete. We hope to have the site open in the coming months.

A: Yeah it's crazy cause all the folks shoot around our houses now and seems the cops don't care at all.. drove down the road and about 30 folks were shooting guns over the road.. people are insane.

- Kev Brown (a year ago)

A: Well now they will say it's fire season to keep it closed.

A: I drive past frequently and have seen vehicles inside, area looks fine so why isn't it open?

A good shooting range for handgun and rifle shooting. You cannot set up targets but itΓÇÖs free, so well worth it. Please pick up your brass so others can keep using the range.

I had a fantastic time at box canyon today. There are toilets but no shade no tables. So bring a table up to the firing line or just have a belt holster. It had metal targets for you to ping and they swing. There is a shotgun range and a long hunting rifle range, an intermediate rifle range. And the pistol firing range is really nice. I recommend coming here any day that its nice out. Bring your water and snacks. There's no picnic tables or anything. Box Canyon is close to Maricopa and you can stop after and eat in town and get drinks before or after the range time.

FREE!!, range is a pretty simple yet open place to explore your firearm prowess. Shotgun area, pistol /rifle with targets @ 30 50 100 and rifle short marksman up to 300. Help out by cleaning up brass and providing feedback to BLM on what to add next. Remember these ranges are only made to accommodate so many shooters, it is key to purchase a BLM yearly pass as well to enrich the spending profile on keeping these ranges open and growing for the communities they serve because in the end freedom isn't free. Stay frosty

ItΓÇÖs a decent BLM range. Few others there, everyone was safe and respectful. Needs concrete lanes and tables for the rifle side, like Church camp. Otherwise a fine spot to ring steel.

This place is wonderful! Besides being FREE it is surrounded by beautiful scenery for those who love the outdoors. Most shooters are like-minded and gun safety us inherent. There aren't people breathing down your neck, plenty of space, and static targets. Don't bring your own.

Really nice outing at Box Canyon! My family and friends were really excited and impressed with the experience. Having targets already set up for shooting is INCREDIBLE! We all enjoyed yourselves, except for the other patrons using their ARΓÇÖs and shotguns at the pistol range. Some people are really ignorant about reading directions and following the rules.

Last time I was here I had a great time, the group next to me was respectful and I even let the guyΓÇÖs kid shoot a few of my guns. I see it says itΓÇÖs closed now is that true???

No shade so you'll need to bring it. Bring seating and blankets or pad to put your weapons. Targets are metal, all there and ready to go.

Excellent outdoor range. Just make sure to bring your own folding table to place your Firearms and ammo on.

Been here several times. Have always had a good time. Today 4/21/24, there was a volunteer guy there. He was very annoying. While I was unloading the truck handing things over the fence he came over and started telling us to make sure muzzle is down range and then started opening breeachs on several of my firearms. While we were shooting and instructing our girlfriends on proper shooting, he forced himself in to tell them "proper"grip and blah blah blah. He was a dark cloud on the day. Added photo of the "volunteer range master".

Lots of nice private places to plink at around here, and plenty of hidden off-road trails, do recommend 4 wheel drive during the rainy season as it does flood out here and some of the mud is thick! Keep public lands alive and just clean up after ourselves.

***NO RANGE MASTER, IF YOU DON'T KNOW/RESPECT THE 4 RULES OF GUN SAFETY, PLEASE GO EDUCATE YOURSELF BEFORE COMING HERE*** The 4 universal rules of gun safety are: Treat all guns as if they are always loaded. Never let the muzzle point at anything that you are not willing to destroy. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you have made the decision to shoot. Be sure of your target and what is behind it. Pretty nice range. It's free, but shooters beware! Situational awareness must be high at all times. Every time I visited, there had been some person or group that had no knowledge of basic safety or range editcate. Not having their weapons at the firing line, flagging people, etc. I suppose folks don't like being told they are doing something wrong or dangerous, even when done respectfully. Outside of the few outliers, it is a great place to shoot! Just beware of newbs and don't be afraid to say something in order to correct bad editcate/safety. I would say it's just like being out in the desert, in reality anywhere, but more so here from a dedicated shooting range perspective. You are responsible for your own safety, those around you . See something wrong, say something. Don't worry about hurting sometimes feelings or bruising an ego or two.

The short answer is: it's awesome! They have multiple areas for different firearms. INSTALLED STEEL TARGETS. NO range officer breathing down my neck. 👍

Ignore all the 1 star reviews for being closed. Site has been open since mid October and is completely FREE. Keep in mind there are no benches, chairs, tables etc. make sure to bring a portable table and a chair if youΓÇÖre with several people. Also, as mentioned in other reviews Friday mornings tend to be the least busy times and the volunteer range masters are very friendly and answer any question you may have. There is NOT a full time range master so gun safety should be top of mind at all times. First picture is Friday morning around 7:30 vs Saturday morning around 10 am.

I was looking forward to this range opening. Disappointed. One main purpose of a range is for sighting in firearms. Their are no benches, no way to set up your own target. I saw one person that brough a table, if you have that option. How do you sight in at 300 yards without a bench or knowing where to adjust? Seems like its main purpose is just blowing holes in the hills. Lots of money was spent on excavating. I would think that there are some safe options to these issues. Hopefully they will be able to work thru these issues. This would be a great setup with a few tweaks.

Location has been open since the middle of October 2023. I've been 3 times. Twice in weekend and once on a Friday. Friday is now my preferred day as it's slow in the mornings. On weekends be there at opening if you're wanting to shoot a handgun as those lanes fill up quickly. Locals are nice and easy going and the volunteer acting as range master (on Fridays) makes sure people are shooting safely while not being overbearing. I wish there were a few more types of targets but the location is free so i won't complain.
