Questions & Answers

Q: I'm guessing the firing range is still shut down?

A: Unfortunately yes it still shut down by the KDFWR.

Q: Has the range reopened since the tornado?

A: Unfortunately the rifles and pistol are still not allowed. The bag archery targets are open to the public. But the answer is no. KDFWR still wanting the club to come up with their share of the matching federal grant money. Which is $50,000.00. We have raised $18,426.00 to date.

Q: Why is this range still shut down? If it's publicly funded, why is the sportsman club shutting it down? It shouldn't be an issue to reopen the range, it's surrounded by hills. If it was safe to shoot at before, it's safe to shoot at now.

A: The Jones-Keeney WMA rifle and pistol range is closed by the KDFWR and not the Caldwell County Sportsman Club. The range is funded solely on hunting and fishing licenses not public funds. Yes the range is surrounded by hills and straight behind the range is a county road that has been exposed due to the trees blown down from the 12/10/2021 tornado. ItΓÇÖs a serious safety hazard. That road is only 700 yards from the shooting benches. The KDFWR wants to put in several overhead baffles to keep people from pointing their firearms at that road. The cost just for the rifle range is estimated at $211,000.00 and change and to have a pistol area it will almost double the estimated cost. KDFWR says they donΓÇÖt have the money to match the federal grants. So they want to club to come up with their share of the matching money. Which is $50,000.00. Which the Club has raised $18,426.00 of that $50,000.00. Until that money is raised nothing going to happen. Once KDFWR gets $50,000.00 itΓÇÖs 2+ years.

The range is still shut down due to "trees being down" apparently. If this is a publicly funded range, why isn't a backstop being pushed up to make the range useable again? Why can't the range be angled one way or another towards either side? Why is a club controlling this range? Who said the range is unsafe in the first place? Or do we just wait for 20 years for the trees to grow back? This is ridiculous.

Nice location. It is a non profit gun range. The gun range is still closed from the tornado 2 years ago. They need to raise money to rebuild the berm. The archery section is still open. It is mostly used by 4-h for archery target practice. Please feel free to donate so they can open the range again.

Huge changes at this gun range! New leadership with Caldwell County Sportsmans Club has meant a new found care and love has been put into this facility. Fantastic outdoor range. You can absolutely shoot for free, but please consider supporting the Caldwell County Sportsman Club by joining their club. It's only like $20/year and totally worth it for what they are doing to keep this place great!
