Darnell Shooting Range

Q: What are the hours for shooting range?
A: If you can make it to the range you can go any day of the week for as long as you want until dark. You'll have to bring your own targets & please clean up your mess when you leave. I went up there today & it was a mess. Trash everywhere so sad.

A: Make sure you take a vehicle with good ground clearance. It's a bit bumpy the last few miles.

A: Sun up to sun down.

Came across a family from Idaho, said they drove a Mrecedes-Benz through all the rocks and dips, thought they were joking, and I couldn't have been more wrong, careful of the dips and hills, its bad but they definitely did it.

Drove up here in a jeep and had the place to ourselves. Bring your own targets.

ItΓÇÖs a awesome shooting range but no maintenance in cleaning. Me and my dad thought about pitching in and cleaning the place up. And for the road, make sure you have a off terrain vehicle cause you wont get a normal vehicle back there.

Could not access even with 4WD. You would need a lifted Jeep to get there.

Labor Day 2020. The steep road had been sporterized by 4 wheelers. It is impassable and unsafe to women, children, or adults. The road was very steep with jumps built in. The spinning off road tires had created large holes and gullies. An axle beaker for even 4wd. Got 1/2 mile in. The steep sections should have been paved 30 years ago. Condemned. Solution: defunding the staff of the forest service would bring vast improvements..The felony charge is interference with a military officer. Public servants do not make laws by declining to perform their duties. The Range is Off Limits To All Military Personnel.

You will need 4x4 to safely go up the road. It also helps keep the road from getting worse so please use it. As far as the range goes, it is a great place to go shoot outside BUT people have abused it in the past and left all of their targets/trash behind. * Please take a couple of trash bags up with you and help clean up the place. It would not take but a few folks over a few trips to clean it up.

This place is an environmental disaster site and the range should be closed. There is nothing here to classify this as a range. It is a trash filled field. I have gone here twice to try and make it a better place and left with truck loads of trash and you canΓÇÖt even tell that I had done anything. I will not go back. If you are looking for a safe place to shoot this is not the place. Any respectable sportsman would not be here. I canΓÇÖt stress how bad this site is.

Yea the road is rough but we had too many people to fit in the 4X4 so several followed along in a 02 Ford Windstar Van & made it just fine. If the Forest Service fixed the road than every crack-head would be going out there! It's a rifle range in the middle of the national forest, are you expecting a nice paved 4-lane? My only problem is that no one cleans up behind themselves out there. Yes, you expect plenty of shell casings but all the f-ing trash and beer cans is ridiculous! The Forest Service has tried to provide something nice for us and it seems like everyone just tries to see how much they can thrash and vandalize it!

Was up there the end of march. Lifted jeep jk did fine and even ran into someone with a stock cherokee that made it up fine. I could see the road getting rougher after some weather but not treacherous like some have said. It is littered with shells and casings. Fun place to shoot but neglected by users. I will go back up and try to clean up a bit.

to everyone that does not have a 4x4 vehicle, this is not the range for you. To those that says this is maintained has never seen it when it was maintained. Take a chainsaw, you may very well need it.

Needs signs posting how treacherous of a mountain road this is. Under wet conditions and without 4x4 capability you could easily get stuck and stranded or even worse slide ride off the mountain. Very serious 3 miles up a mountain to access this range. Exercise Extreme Caution

First of all, a big THANK YOU to the USDA / US Forest Service to continuing to make this range available and free. And to whoever is maintaining it, and it may not look like it is maintained but I can tell that it is, thank you to you also. This range isn't going to be to everyone's liking and it's definitely out of the way and covered in trash that people leave behind after blowing holes in it. At an outdoor range you have to wait until everyone else is done firing before you can go inspect your target so you can end up spending more time than had you gone to an indoor range depending on the crowd. That said, an indoor range is going to have a lot more rules, especially about ammo. You can come here with your .50 cal BMG rifle and blow stuff to smithereens or do some wide area spraying. Another reviewer mentioned the road and its limitations. In the summer of 2017, the area sustained significant tree damage from Hurricane Irma that blocked the road at one time but thanks to some unnamed individuals, that has long since been cleared. That's not to say that limbs won't ever fall on the road again. It's guaranteed that they will as this is in the forest and limbs fall and block the road all the time. It's an unpaved two track that dead ends into a wilderness area. On a good day, it might see a dozen or so vehicles. It's not going to have the same level of maintenance as other roads. It's not especially muddy though and you definitely don't need 4wd but high ground clearance and good tires are a must and you do need to be mindful of the large boulders protruding from the ground as well as the blind corners and sheer cliffs with very steep drops. Go slow but if there is someone behind you wanting to pass, let them. Yield to inbound (ascending) traffic. It may only be a few miles down this road but it will take quite a bit of time to get there. If you are uncomfortable or inexperienced driving on these type of roads, this isn't the range for you. Unlike other forest service roads you may have been on, this one has little room for error. There isn't any cell phone coverage on any carrier for most of the road so if you have vehicle trouble, you have an enormous problem.

One lane unpaved mountain road that should not be accessed by anything less than 4WD vehicle. Road was blocked 3/4 of way to range as of Sept '17. Not worth the time to access unless you're hard-up for an open range.
