Douglas County Shooting Range Entrance

Previously shown as Permanently Closed. Not the case. I was there just the other day, Labor Day to be exact, and it was on and poppin' (no pun intended). Now there is a self serve kiosk accepting debit/credit only - no more cash - and it's now $5.00.

I love the location, setup, and capacity of this range. I particularly love that it is unsupervised but people still have good range etiquette (mostly). And the $2 honor system entrance fee is awesome. There are two ranges on a 90 degree angle, each with ~10 benches, with parking in the center, and a nice series of berms at various distances. They even have great bench rests and shade roofs! This range could be super great. But I did have two issues. The first is that there is no target support system, just hard rocky dirt. I'm sure it's difficult to maintain permanent target supports because people tend to shoot them to pieces, and it limits the distance options at each position. But I couldn't figure out a way to setup a target because the dirt is so hard its like concrete. I don't think I could have dug a hole to insert a stand without a power tool. This brings me to the second issue I had which was strong gusty wind. Maybe I just got unlucky that day but the wind precluded the use of any type of stand up target even 1 foot off the ground. I collected all the rocks in a large area and tried to support the legs of my small 12" target but it blew over many times, rarely standing more than 1 minute. I eventually gave up. I'm sure I'll be back to try again. Hopefully the wind was unusual. Or I rig up some way to robustly support a target without anything to attach it to. Maybe two large steel weights (20+ lbs) with attached vertical posts and a few horizontal wires between. I wish the range would do something basic like vertical posts with steel wires between. Anything to connect a target to, please!

Nice clean facility. You must bring your own target frames and targets, and take them worn you when you leave. Cost is only $2.00 per car! Great prove. Two other groups shooting when we were there. Everyone friendly, and plenty of bays so no one was getting in anyone else's way. Hours from sun up to sundown. Mornings on Tuesdays and Thursdays are only for police.
