Honey Island Shooting Range

Q: According to the website, i must have a hunting or fishing license just to shoot at the range. Is that correct?
A: No. Just $6 a person and eye and ear protection.
- Angela Manino (5 years ago)
A: Sorry for the confusion in the answers to this question. Because the range is located on a Wildlife Management Area, you need to have a Hunting or Fishing Licenses just to even be on the property, no matter where you're going.
- Honey Island Shooting Range (3 years ago)
A: Yes, or a Wild Louisiana Stamp to have legal access to the Pearl River Wildlife Management(WMA) area that the range is on. Note that you do not have to "Check-in" at the WMA entrance if you are going directly to the range and leaving without stopping on your way out. After signing in the range, you will be given a "get out of jail" ticket to prove you went to the range, in case a Wildlife officer stops you to check. You can get a ticket and be fined, without proof.

A: This is so confusing and unfair. Wth!?

A: No just safety googles and ear protection

Q: Can I bring my own ammo or do I have to purchase from the range?
A: You have to your own ammo and guns. They sell paper targets hand clay discs for shooting with a shotgun. $6.00 person.
- Dawn Golley (5 years ago)
A: The Honey Island Shooting Range is a non profit organization committed to providing a safe outdoor range for the general public. The range provides paper targets at a nominal fee. They also have free ear plugs and safety glasses that can be borrowed. They do not sell or rent firearms and they do not sell any ammunition. Guests are charged a $6 fee for unlimited time (until the range closes). You can bring any firearm that you legally own and possess. There's a rifle range, a shotgun range, a pistol range, and a rimfire only range. You can bring any ammunition. Safe hand loads and factory ammo are both permitted. The range officers are friendly and helpful. This range is nicely run and well kept. I've been shooting the many times; always a pleasant experience.

Q: Do you need a wildlife and fisheries license to use the range?
A: No
- Gary Allen (8 months ago)
A: Anyone over 17 needs to have a WMA ACCESS PERMIT. Can be purchased anywhere fishing licenses are sold or from DW&F website.

Q: Is there any restrictions on ammo...FMJs ok in a SKS 7.62???
A: Paper targets are fine. they're steel plinking targets you might have to ask them.
- Owen Buse (5 years ago)
Q: I know this is probably a dumb question but I'll ask to be sure. Does the $3 fee per 25 clays include the clays or do I need to bring my own?
A: It's $4 (as of June 1, 2018) per box of shells you shot. We don't charge by the clay. And DO NOT bring your own clays. We provide those.
- Christopher Daniel (6 years ago)
A: Bring your own.
- Randell Heflin (7 years ago)
Q: why are yall only opened 3 days?
A: Those are the days the state has authorized us to be open. We are a non-profit organization that runs the range for the state and have to abide with what they tell us.

Q: Does this location teaches kids ? I have a 12 year old who wants to learn .
A: Unfortunately we do not provide any instructional classes except for Hunter's Education which is administered by the Department of Wildlife & Fisheries and presented by volunteers from our organization. This would still be a great option for teaching a young person firearm safety. You can find info for classes in your area on the DW&F website here: https://louisianaoutdoors.com/events
- Honey Island Shooting Range (4 months ago)
A: No instructions are provided. Staff are Range Safety Officers. Has your child completed Louisiana Hunter Safety? This is required to get a hunting license and teaches the basics of firearms safety.
- Rich (4 months ago)
Q: Can we bring objects to shoot as targets ? I have watermelons , gallons of water , a 80ΓÇ¥ tv
A: No items like that. Only paper targets and we have metal plates at the ends of our rifle and part of our pistol lines.
- Honey Island Shooting Range (a year ago)
Q: Does each person who comes need a fishing license? Is that all the fees I need to lay? $8 per person and a fishing or hunting license?
A: Can these permits be purchased from academy sporting goods?
- Lee Lefore Clan (a year ago)
A: No u donΓÇÖt need the hunting licenses Just a regular license
- Mohammad Iyad (a year ago)
A: A new rule by wildlife and fisheries last year now requires anyone over 16 on a WMA to have a WMA Access Permit. Exceptions are if you already have a lifetime or annual seniors license. You can get a 5 day permit for $5 or an annual permit for $20.
- Honey Island Shooting Range (a year ago)
Q: Is there a age requirement?
A: There isn't a minimum age requirement but we do ask that in the need of safety if you bring young children then someone has 100% responsibility over the children while the group is out there shooting.

Had a great time. Range isn't that far from the parking lot. I would get a wagon to bring your stuff in if you're going to shoot a lot. Range is very safe and I will be going back. After talking to Kenneth the range officer he gave me a free pass for another day since I came after work and didn't have a lot of time. Also these guys volunteer to run this range so don't give them too much of a hard time.

Highly recommended this range! You can pay $9 and shoot all day if you wanted! The front staff are great as well as the range officers. Mr. Bill & Mr. Gary were so kind to give us two range passes as my husband and I didn't realize it was cash only. Can't thank them enough for their kindness and customer service!

Options for pistol range and rifle range and also skeet range, real good safety procedures of not worrying being shot by someone else haha

They take safety very seriously. They do a safety briefing before you are even able to enter the range. It would be useful if the instructions and layout were printed somewhere on a sign so newcomers could know what the protocol is. EDIT: Based on owner response. I mean signs for how checking your firearms in at the front desk works, and where to go to shoot what.

It's ok for the price, don't go if you're terrified of insects. A bit of the road is rough on small cars. But, it's nice having range officers to prevent clowning. The staff is also very helpful if issues arise with your weapon, and have plenty of on-site tools and equipment.

I can only speak for today (Oct 21, 2023) but I found this to be one of the most well run ranges IΓÇÖve been to across several states (Alaska, California, Colorado, and Louisiana). No place is going to cater to everyoneΓÇÖs preferences but for me the range officers were very attentive and corrected minor issues promptly and effectively. Everything was clear and I never felt uncomfortable. The walk from the parking lot is a little annoying but the fees are very reasonable for to the service provided.

Absolute fudds with a collective room temperature IQ, tried to say I never paid them for the range fee, wouldn't let me keep my concealed carry, and wanted to fight me every step of the way. Will never recommend coming here as it was a complete waste of a morning.

This was our 1st and last visit here.. Parking is 500yards from the range, bring a wagon or lots of help to carry supplies to the range. It is cash only payment, with no capability to break a $100 bill. Apparently, only select shooters are allowed to park near the range. Paul S, our range official was very rude about the parking situation, and explaining the range rules. He was speaking down to my daughter and I like we were children, I was temped to leave as soon as we got there. This is completely unacceptable behavior from a range official, who's job requires communicating with the public. There is no protection between lanes to deflect spent brass from the person shooting next to you. Several times my daughter and myself got hot brass down our collars into our shirts. There were at least 20 vehicles parked on the left side the check in station and 4 parked in the handicap section. There were no marked law enforcement vehicles, and I highly doubt there were 20 unmarked law enforcement vehicles or first responders on site. No one from check in mentioned anything regarding my parking location. Mr. Paul S. our range official who's responsibility is to maintaining the safety of the RANGE, not the parking lot. Then upon entering the shooting area he though it was most important to confront me about my parking location, while speaking to me as a child and insisted I move my vehicle to the parking area down the road. I'm simply leaving a review of my 1st and last experience here for others know what to expect.

This was my first time at an outdoor range and I really enjoyed myself. I was able to shoot my A.R. 15. and AR pistol here. Warning; do not wear shoes you care about because they may get muddy.

The range is top notch. I had not been here in over 20 years and the improvements made it seem like a totally new place. The rifle range looked great and the pistol and rimfire range was excellent 👌. The addition of steel targets and the ability to reset them from the firing line was well thought out. Now for the best part, it's only 6$/day!!! For the cost of a Starbucks you can shoot all day. All the local indoor ranges average around $20-21/hour. The only real limit here is how much ammo you afford to bring 😀. Make sure to bring hearing and eye protection with you when you visit.

Been Coming out here for years, my dad use to bring me as a kid and i still continue to go out till this day, especially after their renovation of the place its been nice, my only thing is they are not very organized as they used to, After covid when i was able to start shooting again, i started coming out more, but it seems as if their range officers are all not on the same page, Every time Ive come out there it seems that the rules for the place continues to change. I donΓÇÖt always shoot shotguns there but i decided to ask since i brought one out, i asked where IΓÇÖm able to shoot it, if IΓÇÖm allowed to shoot paper targets with it, well one officer said i can shoot only bird shot at paper targets at the rifle range or the skeets, another officer said i can only shoot buck or slugs at the rifle range on paper, and another officer said IΓÇÖm only allowed to shoot Slugs on paper at the rifle range. Instead of me going through all my ammo for slugs i decided to pay the $5 per box of shells to shoot skeets. Its been like this for a few months, right when the range opened back up after renovation, one officer told me i can shoot my handgun at the rifle range only on paper, then another officer told me i can only shoot my handgun at the pistol range. IΓÇÖll always support this range especially with how much memory this place has, IΓÇÖm just hoping that all the staff get together and really get on one page and not give people random information. IΓÇÖve met quite a bit of people who stopped going for this exact problem. But if its your first time and you need a place to shoot definitely give this place a shot.
