Questions & Answers

Q: So when you think you might actually get the place open that we pay for with tax dollars?????

A: Well, I just read the info on the site, and it sounds like they need to rebuild the trap. I'm guessing 6-9 months after they sign a contract.

- Greg Kramer (6 years ago)

A: The range reopened this weekend 10/15/20.

- Brian McGuire (4 years ago)

Q: Folks, something sounds wrong with this. It only took nine months to put up the entire skeleton body of the Empire State building. Its been over two years now and still they haven't fixed that trap yet? Sorry, I don't think the trap is the problem.

A: The range remains closed pending a satisfactory resolution from the contractor, Action Target. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is continuing to seek a resolution regarding the rifle/pistol range at the Jay Henges Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center in High Ridge. The range remains closed until further notice due to safety issues with the facilityΓÇÖs bullet trap. The rifle/pistol range was designed to be a full-containment range. However, structural plates of the bullet trap have separated over time, leaving unsafe gaps where projectiles could escape. MDC has been pursuing the issue with the contractor, Action Target of Provo, Utah since the problem developed and is currently awaiting a satisfactory resolution. No estimate as to when the range will be reopened can occur until then. However, MDC is seeking a lasting and safe solution as soon as possible

Q: What's with the range being closed so much! Funding, staff, or other. Do we need to write our Missouri congress to get funding or change management? What's up?

A: I've wondered this too. Why did we need a multi-million dollar range at Henges and at August A. Busch. We're shooters, looking for a cheap place to have fun and shoot not a Vegas resort. A dirt berm is and was 100% sufficient and a lot cheaper to construct and maintain. I'm not sure why there was a decision to make every range into a "5 star" range and drop a ton of tax payer money in to them.

- Andrew Grant (6 years ago)

A: There is a safety issue with the trap itself. Plates have slipped allowing the opportunity of projectiles not to be directed into the trap. We have been working with contractors to correct the issue, which has taken longer than anticipated. While we are working to resolve the issue, we have no estimate as to when it will reopen. The shotgun trap fields, pattern board, static archery range and outdoor education center building remain open for public use and programs.

A: I'm thankful tax dollars are being used for something useful. An upgrade is well deserved and I am thankful.

- Bob Anders (6 years ago)

Q: When will you people get common sense to rip out the old trap and put a new one in? 2 years of lost revenue would have been a nice chunk of change.

A: I appreciate your interest in the range and understand your frustration with the closure. Since the range improvements were completed in 2010, the Department has periodically experienced ongoing problems with the improvements. We have tried to work with the contractor to address these problems and to ensure the range meets the contract specifications. Unfortunately, we havenΓÇÖt been able to move forward with correcting the problem because of potential litigation and a lack of cooperation with the contractor. Instead of waiting any longer, staff are actively working with outside legal counsel to select experts that will evaluate and document the damage to the existing bullet trap. Once the damage is documented we will then remove the existing trap and replace it with a new bullet trap. We want the range to be available to the public as soon as possible, but we also have to ensure that the range is structurally sound and safe for public use. At this time there is no expected reopening

Q: This is ridiculous. The range has been shut down for a year and a half now. If you are never gonna open back up just say so, instead of leaving everyone to wonder what exactly their tax dollars are paying for. Please give us a definitive answer!!

A: I took a MO conservation class there last fall, and specifically asked the agent for a definitive answer. He told everyone he couldn't give us one, but that they've tried multiple times to hire contractors to come in and fix it, but no one has been able to. There apparently is no clear fix, and most contractors say it all needs to be ripped out and fully replaced. MOC refuses to allow that to happen, since it will prove they screwed up in the first place, and continue to try and find a solution to just fixing it instead of replacing it. Please read my original review. It talks about this.

A: Thank you for the insight Mike. That doesnt surprise me in the least.

Q: How about update the Google page and let people know you are closed instead of having a green OPEN visible. So folks like me don't take the day off work, an drive an hr away for nothing. IRRESPONSIBLE, RUDE, UNPROFESSIONAL.

A: I asked once about this when I showed up after they had already closed to shoot trap. They told me they can't control what Google puts down for operating hours. Google controls what hours are shown if you look up 'Jay henges shooting range'. You have to go to their .gov website where it outlines everything, including dates and times that they are open/closed with the yearly hour change.

- Patrick Dempsey (3 years ago)

Q: Hi, I noticed on your website that it says the rifle range is under construction. Is there a date when you plan to reopen it?

A: The plan is early Fall. Trap and archery are open now

- Jay Henges Shooting Range (4 years ago)

Q: What does it cost to shoot at this range?

A: Pistol and rifle range which is closed for replacement is usually 4 dollars per hour. Trap is 4 dollars per round of 25 birds. Archery and pattern board are 4 dollars per hour as well.

You can't beat the price here, but I swear they have the opposite of a "no jerks" hiring policy; every one of the range officers seems to be having a constant stream of bad days and taking it out on patrons.

Best range I've ever been too. Open April-August, just go shooting here during this time, better than any indoor range. They have about 20+ lanes, it's 1-2 people per lane, $5/hr CASH ONLY, free parking, free and unlimited targets, free eye and ear protection!
