Mid-Valley Clays & Shooting School

Q: Do you also have a pistol range
A: Hi Charles, Unfortunately, John is correct, we don't have the facilities for handguns or rifles. We are a shotgun only range. If you decide to pull out your shotgun, please come see us! If you don't have a shotgun, we've got you covered. Our pro shop is a one-stop-shop that offers everything you need (or want) to shoot clays, we even have rentals. Hope to see you at the range! Cheers, Vandy Fiedler Mid-Valley Clays & Shooting School www.midvalleyclays.com (503) 792-3431

Great place with helpful and friendly staff. We are far from expert shooters but they made us feel right at home and we had a ton of fun. Would highly recommend this place.

I was in there this morning to talk to someone about a shotgun for trap and sporting clays. The first gentleman who helped me was very nice and helpful. He then called over a gentleman who had more knowledge than him. I am going to assume that he was the owner or manager. I said that I wanted to get a shotgun for trap and / or sporting clays. But I didn't have several thousand dollars to begin with. His response was well it is what it is and walked off. With that kind of response to a customer, well, I will not be going back for anything, shooting, or anything else. The first gentleman was very nice and pleasant. The second one was not so much. Truth be told, I have more money than I let on, but they will not be getting any. Period needs a course in customer service and a new attitude to go with it. Would give no stars if possible but can't.

A friend of mine has been getting more into clay shooting recently, and invited me along to check this place out. I pulled into the parking lot on Sunday morning having no idea what to expect. I'd been to a few other ranges and gun clubs, so I know that the experience can vary quite a bit. The parking lot is large and gravel, and there is a field setup for several RV hookups to one side of it. This place hosts tournaments, and people will just stay on site when they do. On the day of my visit in December, there were 2 travel trailers and plenty of open spaces. I don't know if they lease these spaces outside of tournaments or not. Inside the building, they have a lot of merchandise available for sale (clothes, equipment and supplies, knives, and a shotgun store). I believe that they also allow for gun and equipment rentals, but my friend and I already had everything we needed, so we didn't investigate this. The building also has couches, vending machines, and a fireplace to relax and warm up at. The range itself is setup as a circle, and kind of reminded me of walking the track around my high school football field. Each station for sporting clays has four electronic throwers, that all throw in the same general direction. You pay per clay and you're given a card to insert into the machine, which tallies the number of clays used, but we were told that even though you pay up front for a count of them, they give you a handful of extra so that you can throw one without firing (so you can see where they go) and also because sometimes the machines won't throw or a clay will break as it's being thrown. If you're shooting by yourself, there's a way to configure the throwers so that they'll go on a delay after hitting the button to throw, but since my buddy and I were both there, we just traded off who was pushing buttons and who was pulling triggers. The shooting course is a lot of fun, with a lot of variety, and they tell you that the "A-B" pair of targets are generally easier to hit than the "C-D" pair. You can take whichever targets you want at each station though. The targets also include ones that run along the ground ("bunnies"), and one that's thrown from a tower. The facility is also set up for skeet and helice, and they offer instruction as well. A key thing I was surprised about was the level of service. As a novice to the sport, there were plenty of people around to ask questions, and at one station I was even given advice that I was shooting too high. One of our rifles was having issues feeding, and the same person offered some oil to try to solve the problem. When that didn't work he took it back to the building to leave in their racks so we didn't have to carry it around. They have push carts and golf cart rental to make the trip around the range easier, too. Their gun store has a wide variety of rifles at varying price points, but be prepared - this isn't Walmart. The lowest priced used rifle we saw was about $1900, and went up around $20k. That said, you get what you pay for. My friend asked one of the employees to help with fitting me for a shotgun, during which I discovered that I go to shoulder a rifle completely wrong, but was shown how to do it correctly and much more comfortably.

Vandy is a fantastic instructor, truly a great teacher! I couldnΓÇÖt be more pleased with my experience at Mid-Valley Clays and Shooting. I hadnΓÇÖt shot much in several years so we started with the basics and she had me breaking clays and feeling comfortable in short order. MVCS is a very nice facility and I was made to feel welcome, safe and at ease during my learning. Highly recommend.

Outstanding clay range! This is our second time shooting at Mid-Valley and having shot across the US for years, I can say these guys do a great job. Their rental firearms are high quality models (A400s, A300s, 686s, and left hand models available too) at an extremely reasonable price (under 35). Case pricing on ammo that matches the best on the market, reasonable non member target rates, and a friendly staff with a few good dogs. If you are a seasoned shooter passing by and want to get out for an hour or a new shooter looking for to try out shotgun shooting for a day, this is the place for you. Their skeet fields are a great starting point and rounds are under $10. Five stand is available and the target variety is exciting ( if Carlos is trapping, he is a fun favorite and excellent on the field). If I lived here, I would for sure be a member.

I had a wonderful time getting my lesson at Mid-Valley Clays with Chuck McClaugherty. I wasnΓÇÖt new to shooting but it had been a long time. Chuck helped correct some poor form habits from the past and had me hitting clays consistently in no time. IΓÇÖll definitely go back for more instruction and to shoot. Thanks Chuck and the Mid-Valley team, well worth the drive!

Absolutely lovely clay course to shoot, beautiful shop with many fine shotguns and gear as well. Staff was very pleasant to talk to, one of the nicest courses I've shot, and not at all pricy for what you get. I will be returning as soon as I can!

First time at Mid Valley and first time shooting sporting clays. So much fun! Seems like a great course we had a blast and joined as members on the spot. Not too far from Portland. Definitely will come again and again.

Vandy did an outstanding job with my granddaughter, My granddaughter is right handed with codominant eyes with the left being slightly stronger. I thought she was left eye dominant and had her shooting off the left shoulder. Vandy figured out the problem and got her off to an excellent beginning with her continuing to shoot from the left shoulder. Highly recommend Vandy for starting a kid off to a great start.

I had an excellent shotgun handling and skeet shooting lesson with Kim. She is very knowledgeable (multiple excellent certifications) yet very patient and kind with me as a newbie. Mid Valley Clay has a large shooting range with multiple shooting stations made from old shipping containers. They also have a wide assortment of rental shotguns. Kim took the time to let me check out multiple shotguns, fit me with the best shotgun for me, and then site the gun to fit me. Finally, I was amazed that, with her instruction, I was actually hitting the clays reliably. She also show me how to use my own "home protection" shotgun safely and effectively. I highly recommend Kim as an instructor. And, if you want to learn to shoot skeet and/or try several shotguns before purchasing one, Mid Valley Clay is an excellent option.

This was such a fun activity for my bachelor party! We did the sporting clays - they had everything ready for us to go: a rental shotgun, ammo, and safety equipment. The lady in front was super nice and got us out to the range and shooting quickly. The sporting clay range was super nice, easy to run through by ourselves, we got to take our time going through it, and just had a lot of fun with all the various stations of clay targets.

Visited MVC during a very busy time recently. A lot closer to Portland than I thought and easily accessed. Staff, and particularly Vandy, took a good amount of time answering my questions and working with me. Everyone was knowledgeable and had very good information to answer questions and provide insight. Never felt pressured and look forward to coming back! Can't believe I didn't leave a review a few months ago after the visit and even more cannot believe it took me this long to visit their outfit?!
