Questions & Answers

Q: Are gun hires available here or do we have to bring our own guns and ammo?

A: Im wondering the same question too

- Turbonine07 (3 years ago)

A: No guns or ammo are provided... you have to bring your own. You also need either a hunting license or a range permit (purchase online) to use the range. Last time I visited they did provide paper targets.

- Brett Saylor (2 years ago)

A: You need to bring your own. You need a range license which is around $35, you can buy one online.

- Robert Oelhaf (2 years ago)

Q: Are children allowed to come shoot with parents?

A: Yes

- Mike Strollo (a year ago)

Q: How long is rifle range?

A: 200 yards

- John H (2 years ago)

Q: Nice place just wish we could bring our own ar500 steel plates to shoot and not be restricted to paper

A: The game commission could definitely benefit off easing up off of some of their more restrictive policies

- Mike Strollo (a year ago)

Q: If I wanted to come up and shoot my pistol, do I have to make an appt.

A: no appointments are needed. But you need either hunting license or a PGC Range permit

- Mike Strollo (a year ago)

Q: Do you need to have your own targets

A: Yes. Bring your own targets and thumb tacks or staple gun. Target stands with cardboard are provided.

- Dwight Miller (a year ago)

Q: Are people who buy the range permit able to shot hand guns at this range?? I like to practice for self protection at home and in that rare moment in the wild this may be needed.

I'm an elderly widow who lives alone. When my sons visit from out of state, they take me to the Range. I was cited because I emptied all 10 bullets from my Ruger magazine. It is only permissable to shoot 6 at a time. If I ever need to defend myself, I plan to empty the magazine. I feel I should be able to practice that in a safe place.

Great place now that upgrades have been made. Super important that range is monitored though due to significant usage and inexperienced shooters. Warden Snook checked our licenses and was respectful, professional and personable.

Great clean range. Well taken care of. Game wardens always watching for idiots so pay attention to the rules. Just make sure you're not loading more than 6 rounds and use your normal range safety and you'll have a great time

After visiting the range the last (3) days it is very well maintained and a joy to shoot there. In my visit I also met the Range officer. (Officer Snook)…I was in violation of the (6) round rule. Officer Snook ask me how many rounds I had in my pistol and I answered truthfully….had I lied to him it would of been a very bad outcome for me. I did know the (6) round rule at the Scotia range but never gave a thought for I shoot at clubs that do not have this rule and just never registered. If ever approached by Officer Snook my advice is be truthful with him..….Office Snook was very knowledgeable and professional….Thanks Again Officer Snook and we will continue to respect you and your range.

Like most things related to the PHC it is stuck in 1950, and really only views firearms use in the context of sighting in a deer rifle or target shooting that old wheelgun. No wonder hunter numbers are in steep decline. There is no incentive for younger people to participate with the tools and methods of their time, This PGC is like an old 13 channel TV with a dial selector. Cheap, underutilized but for reasons. Oh, and the fair chase justification if it were valid, would really mean sticks and rocks, no bows, or guns

This is a very, very nice public shooting range! Well maintained. The Wildlife Conservation Officer's are friendly and helpful. The range office has a lot of nice handouts on PA wildlife. No, this is NOT free to shoot here. You must purchase a yearly range permit from the PA State Game Commission or have a valid hunting license to shoot here. And yes there are rules and regulations in place. These rules and regulations are in place for your safety and the safety of others. If you do not want to abide by these rules and regulations, stay away...you are not welcome! The PA State Game Commission has done an excellent job on building a shooting and archery range for the public and law enforcement and are to be commended for their efforts.

Beautiful range less than 15 minutes from downtown State College. ItΓÇÖs like an oasis, an escape from the city and civilization. Highly recommended for anyone looking to practice shooting, make sure to bring your hunting/range permit and comply with all range rules.

Great range to practice with your firearms! Rifle ranges, pistol range, shotgun range, and archery. I believe they have a skeet range as well. Good forest scenery and environment. Nice peaceful forest road drive in. Plenty of parking and range lanes to utilize. The Game Commission patrols regularly and keeps the range safe. I take my children here to learn and practice firearm safety. Good to know PGC is there for safety and information. There is signage and markings at each lane for rules and regulations. There is also a game commission post just past the ranges for more information. Know the rules, pay attention to the signs, be respectful, and safe. Definitely recommend.

Love this place, meet lots of great people here and have often found help and advice . I shoot black powder, bow and regular gun. I often ride bicycle, its just one nice area all round. I do get some smiles when I ride in and set up my recurve bow or flint lock pistol. Game Wardens are great and help full, and I have never seen then ticket people for no reason. There are rules on display there just read them. You will need a hunting licence or range permit. Unfortunately there are some who don't clean up castings , but most will and clean up for the bad few apples that wont.

Very nice facility. Update: Ranges for rifle, pistol, and shotgun. Also an area for shooting clays, and an archery range.

This range serves a target audience, older hunters and 2 purposes... To shoot in your 30-06 for deer season or to see how your 1911 performs in the cold. That's it. Don't come here if you plan to do anything else. There is a 3 round limit per mag for rifles and 6 for handgun and most everyone there does discriminate against people who are outside the target audience. I had an RSO come by and tell me that my firearm was unsafe. After asking why he just told me it was unsafe and looked at me. I asked him if it was because it wasn't a bolt action gun from 1979? And he just looked at me and then inspected it and was condescending when he realized I was obeying the 3 round limit. Meanwhile 5 benches down there was an older guy shooting 6 shots from his pump action in 1 go and the RSO didn't do anything. Awful. Only plus is it's very cheap.

I've been there many times. There's not usually many people in the morning, if any at all. Most of the people that go there are very friendly, unless there are college students there. Half the time they bring friends that don't know the first thing about gun safety or range edicate. They handle guns while people are down range. You can't tell them anything. I leave when i notice they aren't safe. Other then that, i have a great time with people there and met many nice people of all ages. Nobody has ever begged to shoot my guns or asked for ammo. It's usually pretty relaxing.

One of the best public ranges around. While some of the rules are strict and obnoxious you cannot beat that this is basically free. Lots of options, great facilities! Tons of fun!

Nicest game lands I've been to. We've never had a problem here and everyone has been friendly as long as you are not some idiot at the range. The range is heavily used, so waiting may occur at peak times.
