Questions & Answers

Q: We recently relocated to COMO from out of state. Are there covered awnings here to shoot under? Targets?

A: The seated benches at 25, 50 and 100 yards are all covered. the 2 standing booths at 25 yards are not covered. Targets are available but bring something to hang them onto foam/rubber with. Would recommend either a staple gun or thumb tacks.

- James (2 years ago)

A: Yes. And a lot of them at 3 distances.

Q: What is the process for safely hanging targets? Are there ceasefire times for this? I have not been to a range before.

A: There is a range officer on duty at all times that the range is open who can help you but he does not call a ceasefire unless he sees a problem. To hang targets, you need to talk with the other people at the range and agree on when to "go cold" and then when everyone is done hanging targets you will agree with everyone to "go hot" again.

- James (2 years ago)

Q: Is there a standing pistol range? Or is it all seated/rifle?

A: 2 standing pistol booths with moveable stands going up to 25yds. Seated rifle benches at 25, 50, and 100 yards. There is an additional open area that you can ask the RO permission to use.

- James (2 years ago)

A: There are both

I was concerned to go in that I was told about overbearing monitors and restrictve rules. Definitely not the case during my visit. Monitors were very friendly and helpful. Rules are not restrictve but common sense safety. Truly enjoyed my time at the range and will go more often. Only wish hours of operation were expanded.

Great range, well kept, safe. Just isnΓÇÖt open very long. The hours this range is open guarantees anyone working 8-5 cannot use it unless itΓÇÖs a weekend.

This is a great public range! I went on a friday afternoon to sight in a couple new rifle optics and checked in with the friendly range officers. They showed me their variety of ranges from 25yrd to 100yrd and I used their free targets and bench rests to get everything dialed in. This is not the place to go if you want to do shooting drills or anything rapid fire but this is a public range. I wouldnt exactly want to park a new shooter or pappy and his deer rifle next to the guy doing mozambique drills. Make sure you communicate with anyone you're sharing the range with and follow basic safety protocols and you'll be just fine. I don't understand the negative reviews here considering this is a public, free range. It costs you nothing to go somewhere else.

Man this use to be one of the best places to go shooting but ever since they enforced range officers and policing it it has gone way down hill. The half dozen times IΓÇÖve gone out there to shoot since the new enforcement only once or twice it has actually been opened. Just today took a trip out there and we drive 30 minutes just to see it shut up. Looking at the website it says open today. Every time I come out it says itΓÇÖs open and I get here just to see the gate locked up.

Visiting friends and family in MO. My niece informs me about the outdoor shooting range so I go and visit. I was very impressed. It has 2 main ranges that are split in two. One is for pistol/rifle, 25/50 yards. One is rifle, 50/100 yards. The Range Officers were very helpful in explaining the rules and safety procedures. The bays are covered to keep the sun off you back and the benches are adjustable for right or left side shooting. Highly recommended.

I was at the 100 yard range and verified all clear with others shooting at the other various ranges to go down and set up a few targets. As I was finishing up and starting to head back multiple people opened fire on the 50 yard range as I was still DOWN RANGE merely a few lanes from where I was standing. A fellow shooter and I started to yell and get the shooters and anyone elseΓÇÖs attention that we were still DOWN RANGE. Once they ceased firing we made our way back up. To my disbelief, the range officers immediately walk over me and start confrontation stating I should have verified with the other shooters that I was going down range. I expressed very clearly that I had gotten the all clear and all shooters guns were set down before myself and other shooters went. The range officer reiterated again that I needed to verify prior going down range. They then proceed to walk over to the oblivious shooters that were firing while we were down there and had an even shorter conversation with them. Needless to say I packed up my guns and left. I have not been back since this situation. I will likely not be going back unless I am confident no one else or only other experienced shooters are around.

Professional, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable Rangers on duty. Prior to Rangers being present the range was obviously being misused by attendees. Now it is a safe place to go with family. Our tax dollars well spent.

I haven't gone to this area of the lakes but man, I sure am glad I read the reviews! Thank you all for the reviews, as you've all saved me and the family a lot of time!

The staff's overzealousness ruined my experience. Despite everything being within regulations, I was repeatedly approached while shooting to check if my equipment was legal. To top it off, a staff member forcibly grabbed my gun because my target was slightly high. After adjusting it, I was hassled again for my brass flying 'too aggressively.' Even when I switched to my pistol, I was pressured to shoot slower.

I love that this place is free. But also, it has a pistol range, rifle range and shotgun area. And a staff member to answer questions. Great spot!

Free!! Cant beat that. Room for about 20 shooters. Has 25/50/100 yard rifle ranges with smaller pistol range. Steel targets are not promited so the MDC provides free paper targets. On site range officers provide ppe and ensure nincompoopery stays to a minimum so everyone stays safe.

This used to be a great place to shoot but then came the covered shooting and the echo so loud that you need more than basic ear plugs, the came the range master with this constant ragging over something he doesn't agree with. I live close by and would hear the range being used a lot and even in the early morning hours until the range master came along now I very seldom hear shooting, always some government intervention ruining things.

Park is very clean well maintained free ear plugs free safety glasses which both are required free targets which I think is pretty cool.

This is a free service provided by the MDC, ~10 minutes north of Columbia. There are pistol lanes, 25/50/100 yard rifle lanes and an additional shotgun range if you are so inclined. The range safety officer, Justin, took the time to show me how to handle my new rifle safely. I do not understand a number of the reviews, which seem to be variants of "nobody goes there, it's too noisy." On that note, my protip would be to make sure you double down on hearing protection because people will be firing high-velocity rounds in your vicinity. P.S. the range provides free foam earplugs!

Edit 5/11: The range is closed. Not sure why, but I drove 30 mins to get there and the gates arenΓÇÖt open. Very frustrating considering the range says itΓÇÖs open online. The two range officers I typically see (not Justin) have been rude to me and my peers on multiple occasions. I have been accused of using prohibited ammunition before they even knew what I was using. This is besides the fact that the hours are not accommodating to most working people. This was once a place I loved to shoot at. It is still free though, which is about the only thing going for it.

Nice, cordial staff. Free targets. Good crowd. The backboards used to secure paper targets need to be replaced but thatΓÇÖs more of a non-issue. The shaded pavilions are nice. Solid 8.5/10 range.

Wow range closed on my days off. This used to be the "go to" place to shoot. Now it has limited hours, only know this now because I had to waste my gas driving out there expecting a great day at the range. Reading other reviews it's clear I'm not the only one who feels this way. Get it together mdc rather than ruin the experience for everyone go back to the tried and true hours of operation. Even without a range safety officer how many incidents have there been at this range? Imposing these hours just so you can staff is tyranny and if anyone knows about tyranny it's gun owners

It's a great range and getting better. The basic safety rules can be annoying for experienced shooters. But they are needed to protect everyone from the beginner and untrained shooters. Patience with and helping or coaching newer shooters is fun and rewarding. New shooters, listen to the other shooters and especially the range officers, they are only trying to help make you better and keep everyone safe. Bring hearing AND EYE protection, it's required.

They cleaned the range up, added a lot of nice touches. Guys working the range were chill as long as you followed the rules.

Great News, The Missouri Department of Conservation has l put a patterning board in the shotgun area. Please check in with the Range Officers and get a free turkey head target. Just a reminder, in that there is no berm or backstop, slugs and buckshot are prohibited in the shotgun area. Be Safe, Have Fun and Talk to Your neighbors on the range.

Went to use the range for airsoft target practice, staff was incredibly nice and allowed us to use the facility. Very beautiful location, glad to see a range official out there after the state it came to be assessed in before.

I went to rocky fork gun range today on 2/5/2023. I was using the pistol boxes when a group of guys showed up they was makeing me feel very uncomfortable by standing behind me with there fire arms out the range officers Justin and i cant remember the other officer name then Justin told the guys not to handle there guns when there behind someone and even showed me better grip techniques where at least I was hitting my target. Thank you conservation for allowing us a great and safe place to shoot.

Beautiful location with verying distances, overhead cover, free targets, and shooting tables. Range is perfect for zeroing or just target practice. Range is monitored by Range Safety Officers. Staff is professional and helpful. Read and follow the rules (common sense gun safety) and you'll have a great time!

Very nice place to shoot/practice and sight in new toys. Safe environment compared to what it was when I was a kid. 15 years ago anyone could just go and shoot unattended and it was unsafe at times. With careless, inexperienced, unaware of gun safety, operation of guns and people who didn’t respect other people. Those people still exists but now they have a Missouri conservation staff member there during “hours of operation” which they keep an eye for unsafe People. Which is awesome! As long as you have common sense you won’t have any issues. Fresh 2’x1’ paper targets are free to use provided by the conservation department in case you don’t have any or if you forget them. Just don’t forget a staple gun because the boards are really stiff and it is hard to re-stick staples already on the board. Hearty duct tape will work too and maybe better on windy days... Bring ear and eye protection. It’s a requirement and can get very loud due to from being under a awning. They have a 25yrd. Pistol/rifle area two 50yard areas a 75 and hundred yard shooting areas. Each area has 5-10 shooing benches depending on which distance your trying to shoot. There is a shotgun skeet shooting area right before you get to the main shooting area. There are awnings to keep you out of sun and rain. Except skeet shooting area. Which makes it very important for earplugs/protection. Remember to pay attention to other people and communicate with one another when needing to go down range to hang and check targets. But only 3 stars from me. The one big downside is the hours of operation… Just like other people say. With the money we pay for tags especially for me because I moved to colorado and have to buy 265$ non resident tags. That’s 530$ just be able to legally bow and rifle hunt. There should be more times for our officer’s, local citizens and out of state natives. That want” to be able to practice. I get there is places that are further way to go to practice. Who wants to go that far and some people don’t have the time”like me” during hunting season when your scopes or gear gets damaged an or needs replaced or you got a new gift/toy to practice/sight in. Should at least be open till sunset…! And everyday. Have a hotline to call to report unsafe people… after hours of staff operation. Just my Two cents

Absolutely the best range I've ever used. It's always clean and it has a huge number of stations. Pistol area, 50 yard section, 100 yard section, all with multiple stations and a roof to cover them with shooting benches. The range officer there is highly knowledgeable and very friendly. Best spot to sight in your deer rifle, or take your kids to teach them the basics. There's even free paper targets!
