Q: Can I take my friend who is under 18 as long as I am over 18?

A: James O. Thomason Firing Range is a supervised range that is owned and operated by SCDNR in Spartanburg County. The range provides a 100 yard rifle range with 5 positions, a 200 yard rifle range with 10 positions, a 25 yard pistol range with 9 positions and two archery positions. Visitors under the age of 16 must be under the direct supervision of an adult. I would think if you are at least the age of 21 it may be ok..

I was there on a busy Saturday and asked for help to zero a red dot optic on my new PCC. Brian was extremely helpful walking me through the process and even letting me continue to use the range's spotting scope for the duration of my time.

Nice range , but the con was that my group was shadowed by some guy almost the entire time we were there. I think this was because of how we looked and I donΓÇÖt mean clothing. The strange officer was who was in his uniform and badge was very visible and helpful. But this guy never identified as a range officer or law enforcement. But him standing behind us constantly with his hand on his weapon was unacceptable to the point where i stopped shooting so that I could sit down and watch him because i didnΓÇÖt know him nor trust him. My entire group are college educated Man and leaders in the community but to be treated like this at a public range is unacceptable!!!!!!

Great range, best of all was the on-site ranger. I had a problem getting a pistol sight adjusted due to lack of knowledge and tools. He had it dead on in about 1 minute and taught me how for future adjustments. There are quite a few target stands onsite, mostly at the pistol range. Pretty basic stands but they work. The 100yrd range has cables at the 100yrd mark to hang targets. I suggest building your own target stand if you plan to visit frequently(they have target height and material requirements on their website).

Went there today as husband and I have went many times now.My only issue is that it's close shooting at the pistol range part.Get hit with Alot of empty bullet casings. It can't be helped. We always have our ear muffs and regulated glasses.Just wish they could put up netting.Even on both rifle ranges need them also.Something to catch those as they fly out.Otherwise a wonderful range. We always have fun.Would be great if they had a larger pistol range. But it's free to everyone. To obtain a target stand you give them your Drivers License to hold and will be returned to u upon leaving and everyone has to sign in with time of arrival and sign out with time of departure. We will for sure be going back.I may wear a helmet though as I seem to get hit with other peoples empty bullet casings every time we go.lol.

Great place for target shooting. Several options for distance with both pistol and rifle ranges, as well as a skeet shooting area. They do have nice throwers available for clays, but you do have to bring your own targets and stands. A little bit out of the way, but understandably so. We are definitely coming back.

Great range, the rules are OK but I do think the no rapid fire and wait 3 seconds between each shot is a little silly. I understand its a free range that stays very busy and needs some rules to keep things under control since generally on a Saturday every single spot on the range will be occupied. No one wants someone rapid firing an AK pistol next to them. They dont micromanage you though, so as long as you keep it reasonable I dont think anyone minds, just no mag dumps I guess. The one thing that really got on my nerves was the ladybug/Asian beetle infestation, it was more of a plague than an infestation honestly. They were all over everything and even bit me a couple times. I would say they were more irritating than actual mosquitos. I really think we need the state to spray pesticides in this area, it was actually that bad. Im rating 5 stars because the range is FREE and the facilities and range itself is excellent in terms of an outdoor range. My only request is pesticides to wipe the invasive Asian beetles out, its an actual plague and does put a damper on your range experience.

Discovered cross state park on a random Google search. My girlfriend and I went hiking around the lake and absolutely fell in love with the natural beauty and history of the training facility of World War II. After we were done hiking I learned that there was a free shooting range run by the DNR. Yesterday I made the first trip to the range and it was absolutely blown away at how clean and safe and friendly the DNR people were. Being that it was my first time I had a couple questions and the DNR ranger was more than happy to answer my questions and make sure that when I was shooting that it was safe. Highly highly recommend going for a hike and or visiting the shooting range. You can shoot all sorts of caliber weapons from a 22 pistol open to I believe a 50 Cal rifle. All they ask is that you bring your own ammo, gun and safety goggles and ear protection. A true hidden gem
