Excellent shooting range. There is no admission fee and is still run very well by the DNR employees working there. My late father who was disabled once made a complaint about the bathrooms about a year back. The DNR immediately addressed his concerns by upgrading the bathrooms for him. Needless to say, the staff are very kind, safe, and caring.

The Michigan DNR runs a very professional "Free" range that adheres to strict protocols and safety rules. At first, the stringent regulations might seem intimidating, especially if there are only a few shooters during your visit. However, the size of the range necessitates these protocols to ensure everyone's safety. We visited on a weekday midday, and there were only two other people present. The range can accommodate over 30 shooters, so strict rules are essential. The range offers pistol and rifle lanes from 20 to 100 yards. Each lane has a bench with a roof, making it usable even on rainy days. The on-site staff will review the basic rules, which are also posted on a large board before you enter. During your hourly session, there will be a 15-minute cooldown period for changing, fixing, or replacing targets. The target stands use foam boards and toothpicks; if you have thicker targets, bring staples or longer pins, as the wooden picks may break. Targets must be pinned to the blue backer boards only; pinning targets to the wooden frame is not allowed as it damages the frame when hit by rounds. You won't be able to go past the firing line until the range is "cool" during the 15-minute target change (every 45 minutes). You are responsible for cleaning up after yourself. Pick up your own brass if desired (brooms, sweepers, and recycle buckets are provided if you're not reloading), and take down your targets. Leave the area as you found it. The range doesn't provide any supplies except the toothpicks for clipping targets and onprem lavolatory. All firearms you plan to use during your visit must be unloaded and in a case, and the DNR staff will verify this. You are only allowed to shoot six rounds per magazine, likely to ensure that the range can quickly be made safe during target changes without long delays. No rapid fire is allowed (you must wait three seconds between shots), and no alcohol is permitted. However, you can bring water bottles and stay hydrated by stepping away from the bench to drink. Targets you bring can't resemble human or its silhouette.. we were advised that we would be able to use our targets if we folded over the silhouettes heads so they aren't usable/visible. Overall, we enjoyed our time at the range. It's great to have a free, safe option to exercise your right to use firearms.

Should be open 7 days a week during hunting season. Especially when the taxpayers pay for it. WeΓÇÖll have to keep that in mind the next time you asked for more funding.

The range master runs a tight ship here. A large amount of time, effort, and expense went into settings up this range. I highly recommend it for all your shooting needs from 25 to 100 yards.
