Questions & Answers

Q: Whats the cost of using the range?

A: Nothing

- Steve Halton (3 years ago)

Q: I'm new to CA and Grass Valley. I'd like to come to the range to shoot my black powder revolver. Anything specific I should know before showing up?

A: It's BLM land. There are a few nice concrete picnic tables oriented for bench shooting. Bring your own frames, stands, and targets. There is no RSO or safety officer on site. YOU are your own RSO! Make sure you clean up when you're done. Should be a great place to do what you want.

Q: Is there a bathroom out here?

A: No bathrooms on site.

Q: Whats the max distance?

A: If I remember correctly, we scoped the tree at the top of the hill and it was like 350 yards

- Mike Meyer (2 years ago)

Q: I'm trying to avoid the mostly dirt gravel road witch way do I go ? Coming from Sacramento to spenceville ? Google maps shows two ways

A: You can go through Grass Valley on Hwy 20 or through Marysville on Hwy 20, that way its like a quarter mile on a dirt road

- Mike Meyer (2 years ago)

Q: Can my kid come with me

A: yes but please use ear and eye protection.

- russell cappelletti (2 years ago)

Q: Online it shows it opens at 7:00am. Can I show up earlier or is there a gate where I cant get in?

A: there is a gate but it is not always closed by authorities.

- russell cappelletti (2 years ago)

A: I have never been asked to leave outside of those hours. And there is no gate. But you will have the ranger show up possibly. He only has ever made his presence known and looked around and then left. IΓÇÖm pretty sure that shooting is acceptable from sun-up to sun-down.

- Jamie Hamilton (3 years ago)

Q: So the sign says no lead ammo? Is this current? Basically no hand guns/ rifles?

A: I think that is for shotguns. I have gone out out there with my pistol and deer rifle before. No problems.

- Kevin Gregory (5 years ago)

Q: Is this closed due to fire restrictions?

A: I donΓÇÖt think it would ever shut down because of that unless everything surrounding it was on fire. Every year the fire department shows up and does a contained control burn to keep it from even being a fire hazard.

- Jamie Hamilton (3 years ago)

Q: Can you shoot steel targets for long range?

A: Technically no. There is a sign posted not to. But i do, as well as other people.

- John Dietrich (6 years ago)

A: Yes

- Prince Singh (6 years ago)

A: Thanks guys , i think over 100 yards shouldn't be no problem

Good place it's nice that it's free. The top of the hill is only 350 yards you're effective range where you can actually put targets is about 250 yards. Gets crowded and crazy on weekends

We love going here to keep our skills. It's usually pretty clean and tidy as they come every Tuesday to clean it up. If I had to have a negative, it would be that there are not enough tables. We always meet really nice folks who are more than happy to share if they have the extra room but it would be nice to have more tables.

Good place to shoot. No range fee. I usually get there early before it gets crowded. If you want to do long distance shooting (100yrds+) you'll need to be on either one of the ends. The burm in the center is approx. 10 yards. The downsides are 1) nowhere to use the rest room 2) no shade and 3) not many benches to set up on.

Solid local range! I recommend you bring a buddy. ItΓÇÖs in the middle of nowhere and I heard stories of people going out to set up targets and when they come back their gear is gone. Just rumors so take it with a grain of salt. Overall solid for running drills

Been a couple handfuls over the last 10ish years every shooter is respectful, can be dangerous I experienced when shooters were down range far to the left everyone started firing. It's BLM Property turned into a Gun Range so it's kinda funny how people have complained bout leftover brass hell it's outdoors & free. Check it out does get overly packed on the weekend's. Chill spot I never felt unsafe personally every person respected their firearms as they should.👍👍👍

Great on a weekday! Berms at 25,50,100,200 yds with a large hill behind that let's you get out to about 385yds. If you get a space on the right and shoot diagnolly to the left, you can get up to 420yds. I'd give it 5 stars if the weekend warriors weren't so off-putting.

Had a great time here with other enthusiasts. Wonderful place to be able to shoot without feeling confined within walls and very close to others who may not fully understand firearm safety. I understand that everyone's experience is different depending on the people who are present that day. When I went, I was with everyone that I knew who were safe and respectful and I was able to be on that field with others who practice gun safety. Because of the rain from the previous day, there were clouds that held back the heat and a nice cold breeze. I imagine this place gets very hot during the summer months so I would suggest getting here early and having some type of shade like a gazebo. It should be noted that there are no bathrooms and there are probably none for a few miles so plan accordingly.

Good uncontrolled range, how good it is depends on who is there and how they behave.

Really enjoy going there. It's outdoors so you can shoot bigger guns that you can't shoot in a indoor range. You have to bring your own targets. Please if you do go there clean up after yourselves.

This is an outdoor shooting range that allows the shooter to regulate and control how the range is utilized and when it is hot or not. Shooters have common sense and can look out for one another's safety and enjoyment.

I heard there's a bunch of snitches that go here... You'd think there's a code among gun owners but maybe in California it's non existent. Kind of sad to see and hear that kind of thing happening when there's already so much B.S. in this state regarding firearms.

My son and I went here about 4-6 weeks ago. Large area with Tall Berms at different yardages. 4 large cement what I would recall from long ago as camping tables. The Men that were there that day were friendly and knowledgeable. Patriots! We live in Rocklin about 1 hr. away, worth the drive and God Willing may be moving closer soon.

Great place! We have a La Pue 338, can we shoot off a round or 2? Nothing crazy, it's brand new, and want to test the impact. TIA!

Lots of people that shoots here have no common sense to safety. Mostly the weekends before opening deer season.

People are usually very courteous of each other. Everyone using the range pretty much knows, proper, safety habits. Because itΓÇÖs outdoor and not really monitored every minute, the people using it are responsible for monitoring themselves, and IΓÇÖve not seen many irresponsible people using the range. Although I know there are some, as I saved, or attempted to save a red tail hawk that was shot out of the sky, but it died right when I was about to take it to the rescue person that I found. It was heartbreaking.

Shooting range for free

It is a very good place for outdoor shooting. Suitable for family or personal zero. Please protect yourself and clean up the garbage after the shooting. Thanks! People need such free space to practice using their guns. People need a place like this to release their emotions (please be safe) when their emotions are suppressed.
