Twin Ponds Rifle Range

Q: Are target stands supplied for rifle targets or would I have bring my own?
A: Stands are provided, bring your own target
- Donovan Craig (a year ago)
Q: Are there any fish in those ponds?
A: Not that I've seen or caught. I've tried a few times over the years and the water is too shallow and choked with vegetation. Better off at Nebo Ponds behind the visitor center on hwy 17.
- Chris Tweedy (a year ago)
Q: Is there a charge to use the range? Do the target stands use cardboard that slides into them that you staple your targets to?
A: There is no charge. They have target stands you supply paper only targets. They dont allow shotguns nor rapid fire while shooting.
- John M (6 years ago)
Q: What is the process to set up a target here is it kind of a understanding between the other shooters or does the range go cold once every few minutes I need to set up at 100 yards
A: A little of both. When I was there, there was only a handful on the line so it was just a mutual thing. It's my understanding that during peak times the RSO will call it cold on a schedule...
- Brian Odgers (5 years ago)
A: Okay cool I am thinking of going this weekend got 2 new rifles and a atn scope to zero
- battleship Strachan (5 years ago)
Q: What is this range's policy on steel cased ammunition instead of brass cased. I know you cant shoot any steel core or AP rounds but I just wondering about steel cases
A: Steel, Aluminum or Brass Casings are allowed. If you reload, take your spent casings with you. If you want to contribute them to the range, sweep them into the yellow sweeper buckets provided. Recycling this brass helps to provide target stands for 1st time range visitors. All shooters are encouraged to bring their own target stands after their first visit.
- James Tucker (5 years ago)
Q: Is it rifle only? Can I just use my pistol? How much is the cost? And what are the hours?
A: They have separate rifle and pistol ranges, no shotgun. No cost as it's run by SCDNR. Tues - Sat, 9 am - 5 pm
- Joe Williamson (5 months ago)
Q: What are the distances available in the rifle range?
A: 100 yard range and markers every 25, iirc...
- Brian Odgers (5 years ago)
A: Pistol range is 25 yards, but during Covid all targets are at 10 yards.
- Guy de Blank (4 years ago)
Q: Do they sell ammo?
A: No firearms, ammunition, supplies or food/beverages are sold there. It's a National Forest public range. Bring all of your own items.
- Jim Miller (7 months ago)
Q: Are we allowed to shoot steel here?
A: No, paper targets only
- Donovan Craig (a year ago)
Q: Can I test a shot gun out there?
A: Shotguns are not allowed

Having read otherΓÇÖs reviews, it a great place to shoot. I remember when no authority was there. It was like the Wild West. Gave 3 stars because there is a power hungry range officer. VERY rude and controlling. Yes there needs to be someone in charge but this guy is totally over the top. I spent 15 years in combat units in the Army. I never had a range officer act out like this guy.

Just driving by, dropping in unprepared with me car gun and my carry. The rangers there were so nice, they hooked my up with a stand, a target, and friendly banter. Very organized, very safe. Very fun. Best free outdoor range I've been to.

Went out today. Beautiful range and very well kept! I knocked off one star because while the range officers were extremely helpful and professional - one was not. Specifically, on the rifle side. While I completely understand the importance of safety & rules when youΓÇÖre at a gun range, you have no right to put your hands on an innocent old man who couldnΓÇÖt hear you. It was completely disgusting behavior watching this dude with major control issues place his hands on this man and lift him from his seat all because he didnΓÇÖt wait until the exact words ΓÇ£the range is now hotΓÇ¥ after confirming with everyone that they were ready, before simply stepping over the red line and take his seat. We left and went to the pistol side shortly after where the range officer was MUCH nicer, and still firm on the rules. ThereΓÇÖs a level of professionalism owed to patrons who attend the range. ItΓÇÖs not the place for your power trip.

Range was pretty clean overall, main issue was the rules, no standing at the rifle range, 3 seconds between shots, etc. the range officer there was also very rude and trying to show that he was in charge and he held all authority. He got angry over the 3 second shot rule which nobody had told us, no going near the tables your guns are on during cold which nobody told us either. Me and my group were about to leave and the range went cold, we werent able to unload our guns until hot range five minutes later, which the range officer himself broke their rules where guns must be unloaded during cold range, we werent allowed to unload our gun. He also wrenched someone elses gun rrom their hands, yes they did point it back at us but they still yanked it from an old manΓÇÖs hands.

Terrific public shooting range located in Francis Marion National Park. Range officers ensure a safe friendly environment. Target stands are provided. Three covered pavilions for rifle, pistol and archery are clean and well maintained. Perfect location to enjoy a no cost target practice session. Rangers will offer instructions and advice, just ask for assistance if you need it. Had a really enjoyable time. Heading back next week.

👍 Nice public range, covered shooting area for shade & seating especially in the Summer, people generally clean up after themselves, and 90% of folks are safe & friendly. 🫡 Remember the basic FIREARM SAFETY RULES and help others abide by them too, for everyone's safety: 1) Treat every gun as if it's loaded: This rule prevents injury or damage when handling or transferring a weapon. When you pick up a gun, examine it to make sure it's unloaded. 2) Keep your finger off the trigger: Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you're ready to shoot. 3) Point the gun in a safe direction: A safe direction is one where a bullet can't hit anyone, even if it ricochets or penetrates a wall or ceiling. This rule is especially important when loading or unloading a gun. 4) Know your target: Only point the gun at what you're willing to destroy and be aware of what's around it. 5) Wear eye and ear protection: Wear appropriate protection when discharging the firearm.

Great range! DNR staff are on top of things here. Felt like a relaxed but safe environment. Range is a "do-it-yourself" format meaning, setup your own targets and clean up your ammo. We were there for a couple hours and really enjoyed it.

As a Latino going to a range, I can say, people make you feel very strange with their looks. However, the Rangers at this location were super friendly, not a single vibe of feeling out of place. Helpful, and simply didn't hassle me a single bit. It's in the middle of nowhere, but with that being said. It's a real nice stress free location to practice yours shot.

I was out at Twin Ponds Rifle Range on 03/16/24. The range officers and other patrons were very welcoming and helpful. The safety procedures were top notch and I really appreciate that. Basically, there is a fifteen minute shooting period followed by a 10 to 12 minute 'cold range' period for everyone to check their targets. Then, the cycle starts over again. Target stands are provided. Certainly worth a visit.

Great experience. Range officers greeted me promptly and gave a rundown of the ranges after asking if it were my first time. On the rifle range the RSOs are very clear and direct in their instructions. If you have any questions regarding what you can do during cold/hot times, just ask them - they're happy to assist. They'll help you with any of your setup or shooting questions, and even crack a few jokes. Just pay attention, relax, and you'll have a good time. - Very clean - They have stands, target backers, tape, and sandbags and sleds. Only thing you need are paper targets. This is an awesome free service to the public. - The targets on the rifle range go to, I believe, 25, 50 and 100 yards. - There is a new archery range - No 50 cal - No shotguns - I think muzzle brakes are ok

Got to give these rangers credit. They have to deal with hardheads and newbies, both with guns. They got to have hard rules. Imagine yourself with their job. If you want different rules, then you are free to go elsewhere. Nobody is twisting your arm to use this range.

Love it, great area after renovation and the range masters keep it safe. Use to be like the wild west out there. People would dump washing machines for targets. I do miss going out every year after Halloween and shooting pumpkins but that's life
