I'd give six stars if I could. Just the history surrounding this range is awesome. From the hundred years of the national matches, started by Teddy Roosevelt, to the units fighting in the Philippine Islands in WWII. The old "Gratitude Train" from France after WWII got wiped out by a tornado a few years back. History lost. The military dining hall also bit the bullet from a tornado, so local caterers are called in to run the smaller mess halls. Some good, some less. The wooden platforms keep you out of the mud while shooting the goofy pop-up targets. They're not supposed to be comfortable, they're functional, stable shooting platforms for people that are as tough as Marines to practice engaging the enemy and killing them. When I shoot the national rifle matches, it's from rounded berms farther downrange. The new electronic targets make the matches go much quicker, now that there's no pit duty for pulling & scoring targets at 600 yards. Even the fifty yard pistol matches are shot on this range, but closer to the road. No electronic targets for you peon pistol shooters!! :) I shot pistol for a dozen years here before switching to rifle. The "huts" were originally built to house German and Italian prisoners of war in WWII. Many of these POWs were put to work on local farms in the nearby parts of Ohio. Many, many of them loved it so much that they decided to stay in Ohio rather than being repatriated. There were NEVER any Japanese interned at Camp Perry. Now they are used to house volunteers and competitors for the rifle and pistol national matches every summer. Nine have been preserved on original condition, but many have been updated with new roofs, siding, modern wiring and even air conditioners. With the new latrine/shower buildings every other row of huts, it's a pretty decent setup for a week at Camp Perry. Ya gotta love this place!
