This place is great, full of people to learn from. Really pretty area too. I come here to be a better shot and always leave feeling like ive improved. Its the best range ive ever been to! They are very keen on safety here, which I really respect. All the guys that run this place are so full of knowledge and make for good company. You can ask them questions on anything from recommendations on gear to proper shooting technique. Keep it up guys ✌️

Went for the first time this past weekend. Staff was friendly and helpful. Decent sized, friendly crowd. Worth the hour drive from Hendersonville. Will be back.

Several weeks ago, I stopped by the range while on a motorcycle ride. When I told the RSO that I was not able to shoot that day, but hoped to return in the future, he gave me a quick tour and invited me to watch the brief safety film, which I found very helpful. The safety protocols seemed reasonable and comprehensive. When I arrived today, I immediately noticed that the range was in excellent shape. Everything was clean and well organized. A RSO greeted me as I walked toward the pistol range and explained the check-in procedure. As others gathered, and once all weapons had chamber flags, the RSO allowed us to position our target stands. A few minutes later, the range was called hot, and we began to shoot. The RSOs were attentive and helpful without being overbearing. They were in all ways professional. Over the next hour or so, I noticed that everyone followed the rules, and everyone seemed to be having fun. I have shot at many ranges over the years. I was also a volunteer LEO for almost a decade. The Wayne E. Smith (Cold Mountain) range is by far the best managed. My sincere thanks to the RSOs who allowed for an enjoyable, safe experience.

The first time I visited the range was in the fall....spectacular drive there. I meet Eric before he worked there. He was helpful & informative then. Helped my son zero in a red dot on his rifle. Was there today for about 4 hours. Used the pistol & rifle range. Ben & Eric are great. They are both freindly & helpful. It's about an hour from Hendersonville. You can take your time and not have to worry about a stop watch for additional range time. Keep up this great service. State government doing something well.

The range is great! It's small, with only a handful of lanes, but the drive there was scenic and beautiful, and they made it incredibly easy to just go in, get ready, and practice. It was a pretty busy day when we went, but everyone was great, staff and shooters alike.

They are a good place to go shooting, outdoors and free. You have to abide by the rules which isn't hard to do but I did forget a few times. You have to watch a video and then sing some things on a tablet. It's safer than the gun ranges I've been to. And you can shoot all day if you wanted. Just follow the rules. Also don't get a staple in your finger lol. That was the only accident I had 🤣. They give you a staple gun to put up targets and I held the corner and then stapled it and my finger 😂. But if you want a free place to target shoot and have fun then I recommend them. Also it's in bfe but it's worth it.

Took my son today. It was his first time shooting the gun his grandfather left him. The guys there were great. Ben cleaned the gun up for him and showed him how to use it and gave him some pointers. Great experience will definitely go back.

People are very helpful and make sure all people comply with safety rules. This gives me confidence that I will not be injured by someone who is careless. Great place to sight in a new rifle for deer season or practice for self-defense. Note: You can't use a holster.

Need a reason to visit? Its a FREE place to shoot! Among other things, the drive out is absolutely stellar! Went for the first time a few weeks ago and was VERY impressed! Within just a few minutes of being there it was obvious that safety is the #1 priority. Two instructors were present making sure that all individuals were complying with their safety standards, which are reviewed by video for any first time visitors. Was there for roughly 4 hours no inconveniences whatsoever. If you're a gun enthusiast or just like to shoot recreationally, this is a great resource!

It's free!! I will second the other reviewer's note that the drive to this range is phenomenal. Worth the drive just for the drive itself. That being said, there are limited services here. The pistol range only went out to 13 yards. There is no skeet. You can shoot your shotgun on the pistol range at still targets if you want. Again, it is a free service. The fact that it exists at all is pretty cool.

I went there yesterday and I must tell you what a great experience I had. Ben the RSO (range safety officer) made the experience even better! The range was clean, all safety procedures were followed to the “T”. I had plenty of time to shoot without feeling rushed. This by far is the best shooting range I have ever been to! It is so much better to shoot outside than in an enclosed building. You can’t beat the setting either. Nestled in the mountains of western North Carolina. Double thumbs to Ben!!! I will definitely be going back…
