WDNR Yellowstone Lake Shooting Range

Q: I heard that they had an issue with the berms early in the winter. Is that fixed and the range now open to use
A: Is the Range Open?? I heard that it may be closed to repair the rifle range berms.

Q: How long are the rifle lanes? Pistol lanes? And are steel ar500 gong's allowed?
A: There is a 10 yard pistol range. A 50 yard and 100 yard range. Paper targets only.
- Ryan Huston (5 years ago)
Q: How late are you open?
A: Closed at dusk.
- Dave Wells (6 years ago)
A: Don't recall if there are any lights there. Guessing hours are based on daylight, possibly closing an hour before dusk. Not sure if open in winter, the gate might be locked. There's no number to call that I'm aware of.
- Wendy Van (6 years ago)
Q: How much does it cost?
A: There are no range instructors at certain times. Which means, practice gun safety, and clean up after yourself. That is your only fee. This place is a true gem coming from an IL resident. Don't disturb the beauty this range has developed.
- Clint Lawler (6 years ago)
Q: Do you have a trap facility?
A: Not here.
- Wendy Van (6 years ago)
Q: What kind of targets are available and/or what do I need to bring for targets?
A: You need to bring your own paper targets and I use a staple gun to mount them.
- Dave Densmore (6 years ago)
Q: Are there certain hours that the range is open per day? I'm aware that it's closed on Tuesdays for police use. Thanks!
A: The range is open in daylight hours only. I assume that means from sunrise to sunset.
- Dave Densmore (6 years ago)
Q: Can you go here and shoot any day of the week?
A: Tuesdays is closed for police use. You can use the range any other day (Wed-Mon).
- D Lopez (7 years ago)
Q: Is the range open on legal holidays?
A: This range is open Wednesday through Monday. The range only closes on Tuesdays for maintenance and law enforcement scheduled trainings. The range will not close on any specific holiday.

Q: Do they have ammo for sale there?
A: No, there is no sale of any items.

Trying to enjoy the peace and quiet Nature has to offer only to be rudely interrupted by rapid gunfire of a nearby gun range. Completely takes the serenity out of the venue.

Who in the right mind would put a gun range next to a state or a federal Forest. This is the most annoying vacation I've ever had in my life. Listening to these yahoos shooting their guns all damn day long.

Top notch. Ranges like this are a dying breed of bygone era. If everyone does their part with safty and up keep, we can keep it that way.

It's a public range. You never know who shows up, but it's generally well kept and has a decent amount of lanes at each section.

Hours are posted 10am-4pm as of 11/25/23. 1st time shooting at this range. Everyone I came into contact with was very courteous and respectful. Even to a novice.

A very well built and maintained range. Great for pistol and rifle shooting. Several 'rules' enforced by volunteers aren't posted on site, though the volunteers are very kind and in their defence they are respectable rules. The only major downside is the 50 yard range doesn't permit moving target stands, so there is no permissible way to pattern shotguns at this location. There also seems to be some arbitrary rules, such as allowing AR pistols on the pistol range but not SBRs despite their functional difference being nill. All and all a heck of a free range ran by good people, just with some kinks you'll find as you visit.

Great public range that is very well maintained and has excellent facilities. If you go please follow basic range safety etiquette as I have personally witnessed a fair share of idiots here that have no business handling firearms. Go early in the morning or on less busy days and you will be just fine.

Easy to find with good signage on the County road. Found it to be clean and very well designed. Good access road and public toilet is a plus. The 25 yard range was busy every time I was there, however the shooters were all very nice and would take turns. Southern Wisconsin is lucky to have such a nice place to practice for free!!
